MEN?S TENNIS FINISHES HOMESTAND STRONG WITH WIN OVER LAMAR

MOBILE, Ala. ? The University of South Alabama men’s tennis team came home to Mobile to improve on its record and left with a job well done as it won all three matches at home and fourth match in a row. The Jaguars finished their final homestand on the season with an impressive 5-2 victory over Lamar at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts, Wednesday afternoon. With the win, USA evened its record to 6-6 on the year, while Lamar fell to 6-7.

“This was a good way to close out our match and again it was good to get our two captains (Jack Baker and R.J. Nagel) to get two points first,” head coach Nick Brochu said. “We only lost one match today and to see Aaron play well was good as well.”

The Jaguars struck early by gaining the doubles point, winning at number one and two. Jack Baker and R.J. Nagel defeated Filip Kanczula and Maciej Bogusz, 8-5. South Alabama netters Robert Hodel and Marek Sramek closed the deal with a, 9-8 (7-5), victory over Diego Snyder and Allan Gomes.

In singles action, Nagel made quick work of Gomes, 6-1, 6-1, while 20th ranked Baker defeated Kanczula, 6-1, 6-2. Smarek grabbed the victory for South Alabama with a tough, 6-3, 6-4, match over Maciej Bogusz. Freshman Aaron Krisan posted his second consecutive win after beating David Nanja, 6-4, 6-4.

“We are playing better and better in doubles and trying to dominate in singles,” Brochu added. “We now hit the road and we know both of these teams and it will be a battle.”

The Jaguars will play two matches in Albuquerque, N.M. against New Mexico and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, April 20-21. USA will play the Islander’s from Texas at 10 a.m. Thursday and will be pitted against N.M. at 2 p.m, Friday. All tournament results can be accessed at usajaguars.com.
