MOBILE, Ala. ? The University of South Alabama men’s tennis team fell 4-3 to North Florida at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Courts, Friday. The Jaguars dropped to 1-2 on the year, while North Florida improved to 2-1.
Today we only played with five guys and our player cramped in the deciding match, but that never should be an excuse, but it effected us here,” head tennis coach Nick Brochu said. “We should have closed the match much earlier so we wouldn’t have been effected.”
In doubles play, the eighth ranked duo of Marek Sramek and Jack Baker polished off Argumendo Alejandro and Yuiti Lopes, 8-4. The Ospreys picked up the point though as Kurt Gattiker and Eduardo Pereira defeated Aaron Krisan and R.J. Nagel, 8-4, and the Jaguars had to forfeit at the number three position.
South Alabama came back strong in singles play as Jack Baker defeated Javier Ferrin (6-2, 6-2), Robert Hodel beat Adrian Escarate (6-3, 6-2) and R. J. Nagel toppled Kurt Gattiker (6-1, 6-0). Marek Sramek fell at the one position to Alejandro Argumedo (6-1, 6-0). Jaguar freshman Aaron Krisan and UNF netter Graham Edgar played the match of the day as Edgar won in the third set, after Krisan retired after an injury (6-4, 7-6 (10-8), 6-5).
“We are very disappointed and we need to evaluate our commitment on the court and effort,” Brochu added. South Alabama returns to the courts against no. 56 Mississippi State at 1 p.m. in Starkville, Miss., Feb. 17.
