MOBILE, Ala. ? The South Alabama women’s tennis team remained undefeated on the spring when the Jags took down North Florida, 5-2, Friday afternoon at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
Despite having automatically gone down a point in the doubles portion of the match with the Ospreys due to having to forfeit the No. 3 spot due to injury, South Alabama came out and crushed the competition in the other two doubles matches to take an early 1-0 match lead. The Jag duo of Michaela Babicova and Erica Krisan used a dominant performance at the No. 2 position, winning 8-0 over UNF’s team of Maria Melihova and Vanessa Sanchez. USA’s Sylvanie Spangenberg and Adrianna Solarova then capped off the performance and sealed the point with an 8-1 victory of their own at the No. 1 position over Carolina Melo and Natalia Sanchez.
In singles play, South Alabama kept the momentum, with Babicova, playing at No. 2, picking up a straight set victory (6-1, 6-2) over Durcakova of North Florida to put the Jags up by two. North Florida’s Vanessa Sanchez cut the deficit to 1 in the match (2-1) when she defeated Krisan in two sets at No. 3, but Solarova and Katie Welch sealed the match victory with wins at the Nos. 1 and 4 spots. Welch clinched the match when she rallied to pick up a three-set victory. The Jag freshman dropped the first set 7-5, but bounced back with a 6-3 win in the second and a 6-0 win in the third.
Spangenberg also picked up a straight set win of her own for the Jags at the no. 5 spot.
USA (2-0) will continue its current five-match homestand when they host Georgia State on Sunday at 11 a.m. North Florida drops to 1-2 on the spring with the loss.
