MOBILE, Ala. ? South Alabama put up 11 runs and 12 hits but was unable to stop Manhattan College, as the Jaspers knocked off the Jags by a score of 14-11, Friday night at Stanky Field. With the loss USA drops to 3-3 on the season, while Manhattan improves to 1-3.
USA sophomore left-hander Lance Baxter (0-2) took the loss for the Jags, while Tom Moran picked up the win for the Jaspers. Offensively, Clint Toomey led the way for South Alabama, going 3-for-4 with four runs batted in. Dom Lombardi had three hits and drove in three for MC.
Manhattan drew first blood in the top of the first as Mark Onarati walked and moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Kevin Nieto then singled through the left side to open the scoring.
South Alabama wasted no time taking the lead in the bottom half of the frame as Costigan walked four men in his opening inning. Ryne Jernigan walked with the bases loaded to tie the game. Costigan then uncorked a wild pitch to score David Doss who had singled earlier in the inning.
The Jaspers jumped back on Baxter in the top of the fourth inning as Austin Sheffield walked and Dom Lombardi doubled. Chad Salem drove in both runners with a two-out, single up the middle, giving Manhattan the lead at 3-2.
USA put up a four-spot in the bottom of the fourth inning as Toomey delivered a clutch three-run triple plating Ryan McCrory, Bunky Kateon and Ray Kruml. Toomey then scored on a Jernigan sacrifice fly to centerfield to cap the scoring, with USA leading 6-3.
The Jags saw their lead disappear in the top of the fifth as Manhattan plated four runs to once again take the lead. Lombardi delivered a big extra-base-hit with a triple down the leftfield line. By the time USA recorded the third out, Manhattan had a 7-6 lead.
Kateon tied the game in the bottom of fifth, as he launched his first home run of the season to left field on an 0-2 pitch. Kruml then walked and scored on a Toomey double to right field to give USA an 8-7 lead.
The Jaspers chased Baxter in the sixth inning, scoring six runs on seven hits. Manhattan collected six consecutive hits along with a walk to take a 13-8 lead at the end of frame. Between Baxter, reliever Travis Johnson and Miles Etheridge, USA pitchers faced 11 men in the inning.
Manhattan scored one run in the seventh before USA tried to rally in the bottom of the eighth. Kruml led off with a double, which was followed by a Toomey walk and a Doss single. MC then went to the pen for reliever Matt Nevins with the bases loaded and nobody out. Nevins got Ryan Bohanan to hit a sacrifice fly and Jernigan to ground out before Chris Davis grounded out to end the threat.
In the ninth, USA pushed across a pair of runs, but was unable to muster the complete comeback. USA is back in action Saturday afternoon as the two clubs battle in a double-header starting at 12 noon at Stanky Field.
