PILGRIM THROWS NO-HITTER AS JAGS BEAT BETHUNE-COOKMAN 7-0 IN REMATCH

DELAND, Fla. ? South Alabama starting pitcher Beth Pilgrim (4-1) threw her first career no-hitter in the Jaguars 7-0 win over Bethune-Cookman (1-13) early Sunday morning at Patricia Wilson Field. The win avenged yesterday’s 4-2 loss in the Jags first game of The Hatter Invitational.

Jaguar lead-off hitter Evelyne Pare and Jenny Stevens started the game with back-to-back bunt singles. Pare was thrown out at home on an attempted double steal but first baseman Autumn Hudson delivered an RBI single into right field that scored Stevens from second, giving USA a 1-0 lead after one inning.

In the fifth, the Jags exploded for five runs. Jaguar catcher Kristen Hayes singled to center and Katie McGuire followed with an infield single.  Ashley Elmore laid down a fundamental sacrifice bunt to put runners in scoring position. Wildcat pitcher Allison Garcia threw a wild pitch that allowed pinch-runner Julie Morton to score from third. Later in the inning, Stevens drove in two runs with a double off outstretched Wildcat left fielder Brittani Austin’s glove. Fallon Fisher topped off the inning with a two-RBI single to give South Alabama a 5-0 advantage.

Jaguar freshman Krista Rodden added a run in the sixth with her first collegiate home run off Bethune-Cookman pitcher Taryn Hernandez.

Pilgrim dominated the game, striking out four Wildcat batters and was a Jaguar error away from a perfect game.

South Alabama will now take on Alabama State at 11 a.m. EST in its final game of The Hatter Invitational.
