MEMPHIS, Tenn. ? A pair of University of South Alabama men’s golfers are among the top 10 after the completion of 36 holes of play at the Memphis Intercollegiate Monday.
Marc-Etienne Bussieres fired a 2-under-par 70 in the second of two rounds at the par-72, 7,259-yard Colonial Country Club South Course to finish the day in a three-way tie for second with a 144 total, while Jack Hiluta carded a 72 over the second 18 holes for a total of 146 and will enter the final round tied for ninth.
Daniel Burns is tied for 13th with a two-round score of 148 ? including posting a 73 in the afternoon ? as well, as the trio’s efforts helped the Jaguars end the day in a tie for sixth with a total of 600 over the 36 holes.
“Marc, Jack and Daniel played extremely well in the afternoon round,” Jaguar head coach Ben Hannan commented. “It’s a very hard golf course, you have to be patient, hit shots and execute ? that’s why they hold a tour event here. Unfortunately we had to a count a big number each round, but we’re still in the tournament. We have to get everyone back in it tomorrow.”
After shooting 2-over-par in the morning round, Bussieres was at 4-over-par for the tournament five holes into the second 18 before turning his day around. He recorded back-to-back birdies on holes No. 6 and 7 to pull back to even par at the turn, then birdied the 10th and 13th holes ? both par fours ? making him one of six players among the 90 individuals in the field to break par in the second round.
Bussieres, who was of only three players in the second round and five over the 36 holes to birdie No. 13, led the field for the day by going 1-under on the par four holes.
Hiluta accounted for two of those birdies on the 13th as well, accomplishing the feat in both rounds while carding five total on the day. Burns also birdied No. 13 in the afternoon, one of the three he carded over the second 18 holes.
Cody Klein shot a two-round total of 162 and Grant Price posted a 165 on the day, while David Leathem ? playing as an individual ? had a score of 163 over the 36 holes.
USA is tied with Xavier entering the last round, with the two teams one stroke behind Maryland and two shots in back of Louisville. Ohio State, paced by Vaughn Snyder’s 6-under-par total of 138 ? he’s the only player in the tournament to break par on the day ?shot a 289 in the afternoon to build a three-stroke advantage with a two-round, 12-over-par total of 588.
The final round of USA’s third event of the fall season, which includes a total of 16 teams in the field, will begin with a shotgun start Tuesday morning.
