BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. ? South Alabama women’s golfers shot an opening-round 315 to place them seventh after the first day of the 2008 L.D.R. Investments/Lady Colonel Collegiate in Bay St. Louis, Miss.
Shirley Harvey’s opening-round 75 led the way for the Jags. She is tied for fifth individually, just two shots back of three players tied for the lead at 73. Claudia Wolf shot a 76 to place her in a tie for 10th, and Nina Offenberg added a 79 for USA. Ana Garcia rounded out the Jags’ scorecard with an 85.
“There are a lot of positives we can take from today,” head coach T.J. Jackson said. “We’ve got a lot of things we need to work on to get better, but I feel pretty good about the way we played.”
Anna Sellen-Runefjell, competing as an individual in her first collegiate tournament, shot 81 in the opening round to place her third among the nine golfers competing only as individuals. She had missed the first two events while recovering from an injury.
USA tees off for its final round at approximately 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. The Jags enter the final day just six shots back of third place. Though originally scheduled to be played in Houma, La., the tournament was moved to The Bridges Golf Club in Bay St. Louis due to hurricane damage. Despite the move, Nicholls State is still serving as tournament host, and the Lady Colonels are tied for third after shooting 309 in the opening round.
