ATHENS, Ga. ? University of South Alabama men’s tennis player Marek Sramek won his opening singles match Friday afternoon at Southern Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Sramek, the third seed in the Division I Singles Draw, captured a pair of 6-4 victories on Friday to advance to the third round of the tournament. Sramek will now take on Chris Racz of Tennessee in the Round of 32 on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The news wasn’t so great for a pair of Sramek’s Jag teammates also competing in the same draw. Robert Hodel dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Georgia’s Jamie Hunt, seeded-10th and USA’s Jack Baker (Seeded 11th) was upset by Vijay Paul of Vanderbilt (6-2, 6-3),
In the Division II Singles Draw, South Alabama’s R.J.Nagel won both his opening matches on Friday. In the opening round, Nagel took down Florida’s Eric Corace in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) and then won in two sets (6-2, 6-1) over Carlos Salmon of Wake Forrest. Nagel will now face Johannes Pulsfort of South Carolina at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
USA’s Aaron Kirsan fell in straight sets as well to UNC-Wilmington’s Michael Periera, 6-1, 6-3 on Friday.
The South Alabama duos of Sramek/Baker and Nagel/Hodel will compete in the Division I Doubles Draw on Saturday. Nagel and Hodel will face the team of Enrique Olivares/Sebastian Serrano (ETSU), while USA's Sramek/Baker will face Scott Collins and Alan Donald of Wofford.
