MOBILE, Ala. ? The University of South Alabama soccer team lost to Southern Mississippi 2-1, Friday night at “The Cage.” The loss takes the Jaguars to 3-2 on the year, while the Golden Eagles (1-4) picked up their first win of the season.
South Alabama got on the board early in the ninth minute after Liz Clark headed the ball pass the goalie on a Carly Williams cross. The goal was Clark’s sixth on the season and Williams’ fourth assist on the year.
Southern Mississippi struck back six minutes later when USA misplayed a USM corner kick leaving Amy Skeet wide open, tying the game 1-1. In the 53rd minute Southern Miss. took the lead when South Alabama goalie Kelsie Langford and the USA defense thought there was an offside penalty, allowing Jana Mason to put the ball in the back of the net. Mason’s goal proved to be the difference in the game as USM took a 2-1 lead and held it.
“We came out and set the tone quickly with the early goal and played well,” head coach Mike Varga said. “After they scored their first goal we allowed them to gain confidence and keep us on our heels.”
South Alabama will continue their home weekend action Sunday as they play Jacksonville State at 1 p.m.
