JAGS AND TOPPERS SET FOR MONUMENTAL WEEKEND SET

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. ? After knocking off the No. 9 Wichita State Shockers on Tuesday night, the University of South Alabama baseball team will open a three-game Sun Belt Conference weekend series with the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at Nick Denes Field in Bowling Green, Ky. Friday night.

Game times for the series are 6 p.m. on Friday night, 3 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. The weekend set will have major post-season implications for both teams as USA and WKU are looking to qualify for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

South Alabama enters the weekend in ninth place in the SBC. Sporting an overall record of 25-22 and 12-15 in the conference, USA has won four of its last six games. Right-hander Joey Doan will get the ball on Friday night. Doan is 3-6 with an ERA of 6.36.

Western Kentucky is 21-25 and 12-12 in the SBC. The Hilltoppers dropped two games to New Orleans last weekend. The WKU bullpen gave up six runs in the seventh inning on Saturday to lose 9-7 and gave up six in the seventh and five in the eighth to lose 13-11 on Sunday.

The Jags will look to put the pressure on the Topper pitching staff after scoring 55 runs in the past six games. USA faced the Wichita State Shocker pitching staff, which held the third-best ERA in the nation, and plated 12 runs in two games.

Leading the way for USA is junior first baseman Jeff Cunningham. Cunningham is batting .342 with 20 home runs. Currently, he is one home run short of the USA single season home run record of 21. Three former Jags hold the record, set most recently by Joey Choron in 1997.

All three games can be heard on WNSP 105.5 FM. Live stats can be accessed at www.USAJAGUARS.com.
