CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The University of South Alabama men’s golf team fired rounds of 300 and 318 at the Palisades Golf Classic Monday. South Alabama is in 18th place after 36 holes, while Charlotte is currently in first place recording 563. Southeastern Louisiana golfer Matthew Carvell is a top the individual leader board after recording a seven-under par 137.
“We are a little handicapped without Marc and Kyle, but I thought we played pretty well during the first round,” said men’s coach Ben Hannan.
South Alabama was led in the first round by junior Jonny Caldwell and sophomore Daniel Burns. Caldwell and Burns each fired an even-par 72. Senior Dane Thorogood turned in 75, while sophomore Dan Swomley carded 79. Freshman Marc-Etiennne Bussieres had to withdraw from the tournament because of an injury.
After 36 holes, USA was paced by Swomley’s two-over par 74. Burns carded 76, while Thorogood and Caldwell each turned in 83 and 85, respectively.
“We need to come out tomorrow and play better golf no matter the situation we are in,” said Hannan.
The Palisades Golf Classic continues at Palisades Country Club with a 8:00 shotgun start Tuesday.
