NEWPORT NEWS, Va. ? After being forced indoors due to inclement weather, the University of South Alabama women’s tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 28 Virginia Commonwealth Saturday at the Center Court Racquet Club.
With the win, the Rams improve to 18-6 on the spring, while the Jags fall to 13-8.
VCU came out and took the early 1-0 match lead when it captured two of the three doubles matches. USA’s Michaela Babicova and Dijana Stanic picked up the lone win in doubles action when the Jag duo defeated Viktoria Konstantinova and Olena Leonchuk, 8-5 at the No. 3 spot.
In singles action, the Lady Rams picked up straight set wins at the Nos. 1, 3, 4 and 6 positions to clinch the victory. South Alabama’s Michaela Babicova, playing at No. 2, defeated Marianna Yuferova, ranked No. 105 by the ITA, 6-1, 6-2, and Dijana Stanic got USA’s other point of the match when Vera Petrashevitch had to retire in the second set of the No. 5 match. Stanic, who won the first set 6-3, improved her winning streak to 11 straight matches with the win.
