MOBILE, Ala. ? The University of South Alabama women’s tennis team opened its two-game homestand with convincing 7-0 decision against Sun Belt Conference foe Louisiana-Lafayette (13-8). The No. 47 Jags (12-7) look to improve spotless home record at the Bruce David Memorial Courts against the University of Louisville on Thursday at 11 a.m.
In the doubles portion of the match, the Jags jumped out the gate quickly against the Rajin Cajuns. Senior Dijana Stanic and sophomore Michaela Babicova blanked Clemence Remy and Laura Martelli, 8-0, at the no.3 position.
The battle to control the first point of the match was hotly contested at the no.1 and no.2 positions. Junior Adrianna Solarova and sophomore Sylvanie Spangenberg grinded out an 8-6 victory over Tammy Day and Chanell Meijer at no. 1, while freshman Rita Frietas and junior Jelena Krivacevic outlasted Mrythe Moleveld and Angela Dangond, 8-5, completing the sweep.
In singles, Spangenberg downed Martelli, 6-3, 6-2, at no.5 and Babicova, the No. 112 singles player in the Fila/ITA Rankings, halted Molenveld, 6-2, 6-0, at no.2 to quickly give the Jags a 3-0 lead.
Solarova, the No. 47th-ranked player in the country, and teammate Frietas, playing at no.6, both needed seven wins in the first set to defeated their opponents. Both imposed their will in set two, Solarova winning, 7-5, 6-0, over Day, and Frietas, a 7-5, 6-2 victor over Dangond.
To complete the singles sweep, Jags Krivacevic and Stanic needed three sets to knock off their Rajin Cajun adversaries. Krivacevic topped Remy, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, at the no.3, while Stanic held off Meijer, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) to secure the shutout.
