Sun Belt Conference Sports
NEW ORLEANS - University of South Alabama track and field athlete Ajoke Odumosu was named Sun Belt Conference Track Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive outing, late Tuesday. The senior won the award voted on by conference officials for the first time this season last week, along with classmate Vincent Rono.
Odumosu notched her third NCAA Regional qualifying time of the season at the Coach "O" Invitational in Troy, Ala., this past Saturday. The Lagos, Nigeria native placed second in a close 200m race, clocking 23.96 to equal the Regional standard. In the second of her two quality individual performances at Troy, the senior won the 400m in a time of 53.96. An NCAA Championships finalist at 400m hurdles in 2006, the World Junior Games medalist now owns qualifying times at 200m (23.96), 400m (53.80), 400m hurdles (57.08).
The Jags, led by Odumosu, Rono, Tonny Okello, will travel to Austin, Texas for the 80th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, April 4-7. Last year, Odumosu placed fourth in the 400m hurdles (57.61) at the Texas Relays.
Rono broke the Mike Myers Stadium record in the 1500m (3:42.69) and the senior is still undefeated at the 1500m/mile distance, including his amazing NCAA Championships run in June.
Okello, also a senior, is the two-time defending champion at 5000m in Austin. The Lira, Uganda native has been limited in action this year due to injury, but looks to be recovered just in time for one of the country's biggest meets.
After the Texas Relays, the Jags host their final home meet of the year, the USA Invitational on April 14. The meet features, as it did last year, the Sub-4 Minute Mile, still a magical barrier in collegiate track and field. The meet will begin at 10 a.m., with mile run scheduled for 1 p.m.
