The 53rd-ranked South Alabama women’s tennis team’s bid for an upset of top-seeded Florida International fell short in the 2007 Sun Belt Conference Championship Match Sunday, 4-1 at the Waranch Tennis Complex. With the loss, the Jaguars fall to 17-10 and will wait to see if they will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
No. 29 Florida International opened the scoring with two wins in doubles at Nos. 2 and 3. Egle Petrauskaite and Pricilla Castillo defeated USA’s duo of Rita Freitas and Jelena Krivacevic, 8-2 at No. 2, while Shilla D’Armas and Maria Dolores Pazo knocked off Michaela Babicova and Dijana Stanic, 8-5.
The Jaguars evened the match at 1 a piece when Babicova defeated Petrauskaite 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 singles position. The Golden Panthers took the lead for good as Marijana Cutuk won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4 over Sylvanie Spangenberg. Castillo and Nikkita Fountain posted wins at Nos. 5 and 6 to win 4-1.
