DENTON, Texas ? The 27th-ranked South Alabama men’s tennis team opened the 2007 Sun Belt Conference Championship with a 4-0 win over eighth-seeded Western Kentucky at the Waranch Tennis Center. The Jaguars improve to 19-4, while WKU ends its season at 9-9.
USA opened the match with two wins in doubles as juniors R.J. Nagel and Jack Baker defeated Matt Broom and Thomas Krug at the No. 2 position, 8-1. Senior Dias Doskarayev and sophomore Craig Dunne defeated David Bowman and Quinn Saine, 8-1 at No. 3. USA’s duo of junior Robert Hodel and sophomore Marek Sramek held a 6-1 lead at the top spot when their match was stopped after the Jaguars won the team point.
In singles, Nagel disposed of Broom, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 to put the Jags up 2-0. Dunne defeated Sam Patterson at No. 6 in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0 and USA clinched the match as Baker posted two shutout sets over Andy True at No. 2
USA now will face the winner of the 4/5 match between Louisiana-Lafayette and UALR tomorrow at 5 p.m.
