ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of South Alabama women’s golf team is heading to the Sun Belt Conference Golf Tournament at Eagle Pines Golf Course, Monday-Wednesday. The Lady Jags have won five tournaments this season, but none are as important as the conference tournament and its automatic bid.
“We are going to treat this tournament the same as any other tournament and limit mistakes as we go,” said women’s coach T.J. Jackson. “We have talked about how we can only control what we do and how we play.”
The Lady Jags have been paced all season by junior Sara Marti and senior Elin Andersson, and will looking to them for strong play. Marti, a native of Houston, Texas, is leading USA in stroke average, carding a 75.14. Andersson, from Eskilstuna, Sweden, has two victories on the season, the Lady Colonel Collegiate and the Troy Women’s Invitational. Senior Michelle Toth and sophomores Darah Newell and Shirley Harvey will be rounding out the five-team squad heading to Eagles Pines.
“This is a Pete Dye course, which usually means this will be a difficult course,” said Jackson. “The game of golf is minimizing mistakes and keeping the ball in front of you, as long as we stick with that mentality we will be fine.”
The Sun Belt Conference Golf Championship consists of 54 holes and will begin Monday with an 8 a.m. double-tee start.
