AUBURN, Ala. ? The 52nd-ranked University of South Alabama women’s tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 37 Auburn Thursday afternoon at the Auburn Intramural Tennis Facility.
South Alabama (14-9) will now return home to close out the regular season against North Florida on Saturday at 2 p.m. With the win, the Tigers improve to 11-8 on the season.
The host Tigers came out of the gates on fire and swept all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead in the match.
In singles competition, South Alabama it didn’t get any better for the Jags as they played short-handed without line up regulars, Adrianna Solarova, Michaela Babicova and Rita Freitas. Without the three players, USA was forced to move its singles players up two positions and started the singles portion of the match down 3-0. The Tigers picked up default wins at the Nos. 5 and 6 spots to put them one point away from clinching the match. Kelly Adams, playing at No. 4, wasted no time in clinching the match for Auburn, as she defeated USA’s Yana Bokareva 6-0, 6-0.
The Tigers went on to pick up straight set wins at the No 1 and 2 positions and Whitney Chappell finished off the win for Auburn when she defeated Jag senior Dijana Stanic in three sets (1-6, 6-4, 1-0) at No. 3. The loss for Stanic ended her 12-match win streak.
