THIBODAUX, La. ? The University of South Alabama continued its winning ways Tuesday night, as the Jags knocked off Nicholls State by a score of 4-2 at Ray E. Didier Field in Thibodaux, La. With the win, South Alabama improves to 11-4 and has won seven in a row, while Nicholls drops to 3-11.
Freshman left-hander Lance Baxter got the start for USA and threw six strong innings, giving up only one run. Tyler Kerns (1-0) got the win after he came on in relief and pitched one innings before giving way to David Doss. After Doss got out an eighth inning jam, the Jags turned the game over to their closer, freshman lefty Chris LaGrow. LaGrow pitched a scoreless ninth inning, to nail down his fourth save of the season.
Although the Jag offense struggled, collecting only five hits, USA scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to go ahead for good. The Jags got the leadoff man on and took advantage of a Nicholls error, en route to plating three runs. Doss collected one hit on the night to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.
Next up for South Alabama is the opening weekend of the Sun Belt Conference regular season, as the Jags travel to Lafayette, La. for a three-game series against the Ragin’ Cajuns. Game times for the series are 6:30 p.m. Friday night, 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast on WNSP 105.5 FM.
