MOBILE, Ala ? The University of South Alabama women’s golf team finished the 2007 USA Lady Jaguar Invitational in ninth place at Azalea City Golf Course Tuesday. The Lady Jags improved their team score by one stroke from Monday’s round shooting 307. Overall USA carded a team score of 615.
Middle Tennessee swept the team and individual awards as they shot 292 to take the team championship and Taryn Durham shot four-under par 68 to win the medal honors.
South Alabama was led by sophomore Darah Newell who fired a one-over par 73 to finish tied with three other golfers in 12th. Junior Sara Marti shot three-over par 75 each day to finish in 15th, while senior Michelle Toth recorded a two-day score of 157. Senior Elin Andersson carded 159 and junior Sally Miller turned in 164.
Individually, sophomore Shirley Harvey fired a 77 to shoot 153 after 36 holes. Junior Alexis Beard shot an 84 to finish with 161.
“We didn’t play as well as we wanted to, but Middle Tennessee played extremely well and won again here at Azalea,” said head coach T.J. Jackson. “We did have some positives as Darah played well and Sara continued to play solid.”
Jacksonville State finished in second recording 605, while Lamar and Winthrop tied in third with 606. Belmont recorded rounds of 304 and 305 to finish in fifth with 609.
Malin Fryk of Western Carolina finished behind Durham in second place firing a one-under par 71 to finish with 144. Three golfers tied for third with 145, including day-one leader Katelyn Stanier of Samford.
The Lady Jags return to action March 19-20 for the 5th Annual Samford Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala.
“We are going to get together this week and gather our thoughts as team and go from there,” said Jackson.
