MOBILE, Ala. ? The 47th-ranked University of South Alabama women’s tennis team remained undefeated at home this season when it captured a 5-2 victory over No. 75 Troy at the Bruce David Memorial Tennis Courts.
With the win, USA (11-7, 4-1 SBC) wins its seventh home match of the season, while Troy falls to 11-5 on the spring.
In doubles play, both Troy and South Alabama split a pair of dominate wins. USA’s team of Michaela Babicova and Dijana Stanic made quick work of Troy’s Nichole Shaw and Carolina Jounia with an 8-0 win at No. 3, but the Trojan duo of Claudia Strauss and Stephanie Veria evened things up with an 8-1 win of their own at No. 2. In what would be the deciding match of the doubles action, Troy’s Rawia El SiSi and Annabella Bares jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead at the first spot. USA’s team of Adrianna Solarova and Sylvanie Spangenberg, however, bounced back and took six of the next seven points en route to the 8-5 victory to clinch the point for the Jags.
Already holding a 1-0 lead in the match, South Alabama quickly stretched out its lead to 3-0 with a pair of straight set victories from Stanic (6-0, 6-0) at the No. 5 position and Rita Freitas (6-0, 6-3) at No. 6. Troy cut the deficit to one later in the match when it also picked up a pair of two-setters at No. 2 and 3. Solarova, playing at No. 1, however clinched the match for the Jags when the 47th-ranked singles player in the nation took down El SiSi at the first position, 6-4, 6-3. Jelena Krivacevic was also a straight set winner for the Jags on the day to round out the match scoring.
The South Alabama women will continue its current three-match homestand on April 3 when the Jags take on fellow Sun Belt Conference rival Louisiana-Lafayette at 11 a.m.
