TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of South Alabama track and field teams took to the Sam Bailey Track and Field Complex to compete in the 2007 Alabama Relays. Several Jaguar athletes had notable performances in the day's individual events. Action continues at the University of Alabama on Sunday with field events scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m., and running events set to start at 12:30 p.m.
Late Friday evening, Jag newcomer Micah Tirop won the 10,000m in a time of 30:52.93. The Sun Belt Conference indoor titlist at 5000m took the measure of Western Kentucky's Cosmas Bor, who finished second nearly a minute back in 31:43.79.
Senior Vincent Rono ran his second NCAA MidEast Regional qualifying time of the season, winning the 5000m in 13:49.31. The NCAA National Champion at the shorter 1500m distance bested the regional standard at that distance at Southern Mississippi two weekend's ago. Tonny Okello, reigning SBC champion at this distance, was third with a time of 14:34.69, behind USM's Vincent Tanui (14:18.72) and in front of three Volunteers from the University of Tennessee, Ben Lukowski (14:43.10), Andy Baksa (14:43.45) and Matt Piccarello (14:52.91).
Ajoke Odumosu improved her Region-qualifying time in the 400m hurdles in her convincing win on Saturday, The NCAA finalist's 57.08 outpaced Kou Luogon (59.36) of Sidney Track Club and Veronica Patterson (59.60) of Middle Tennessee by more than two seconds. Odumosu, like fellow senior Rono, has bested the regional mark in two events, owning a 53.80 in the flat 400m.
Newcomer Oluwagbenga Awoleye led the Jags in the one-lap dash, finishing third in 47.37. He was bested by Cornelius Duncan (46.27 - Regional qualifier) of Southern Mississippi, and MTSU's Sean Waller (46.99 - Regional).
Former LeFlore HS (Mobile, Ala.) standout Timothy Johnson crushed his personal record in the 400m, stopping the clock in 47.62, fifth fastest on the day. Johnson, a former 100m sprinter, had a previous PR of 48.81 run at last year's Southern Miss. Invitational.
