TRACK AND FIELD PREPARES FOR FIRST BIG TEST AT ALABAMA RELAYS THIS WEEKEND

MOBILE, Ala. - The University of South Alabama track and field teams head to the Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the 2007 Alabama Relays.  Saturday's events at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium on the campus of the University of Alabama begin at 8 a.m., in the field with the men's hammer throw while running events are scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m., with the 5000m for women.  Sunday's schedule opens with the women's hammer throw at 8 a.m.  Running events on Day-2 of the meet commence with the women's shuttle hurdle relay at 12:30 p.m.

Just two meets into the outdoor season, four Jaguars have already attained NCAA MidEast Regional qualifying marks in individual events. National champion Vincent Rono qualified in his premier event last time out at Southern Mississippi, running 3:41.61 over 1500m.  Also on the men's side, newcomer Oluwagbenga Awoleye, posted a time of 46.79 in the 400m to come one step closer to the NCAA Championships in June.

Nicole Knox broke her own school record in the high jump at the season-opening Jaguar Premier Invitational, March 3.  Her new best of 1.81m (5' 11.25") is an automatic qualifying mark for May's Regional Championships.  Ajoke Odumosu, an NCAA finalist in the 400m hurdles last year, has two performances bettering the Regional standard.  The senior ran 58.68 over the hurdles at the Jaguar Premier and followed that up with a 53.80 in the flat 400m at Southern Mississippi on March 10.
