BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of South Alabama women’s golf team won its fifth tournament of the 2006-2007 season, after shooting 302 on the final day of the Samford Intercollegiate Tuesday.
The Lady Jags won their first four tournaments of the season before winning this week, at the par 71 Timberline Golf Club. Belmont’s Lorrie Warren was the medalist firing 223, one stroke ahead of Aubree Moore of Eastern Kentucky.
“It’s a good feeling to win after having to fight for this one,” said head coach T.J. Jackson. “We started slow this morning, but this one was a real total team effort.”
Seniors Elin Andersson and Michelle Toth led USA, recording one-over par 73’s, while junior Sara Marti fired 77. Sophomores Shirley Harvey and Darah Newell carded 79 and 81, respectively.
Behind South Alabama and Eastern Kentucky was Belmont carding 906. Jacksonville State finished in fourth firing 928, while West Florida recorded 930.
West Florida golfer Sarah Nicholson finished in third with 225, two strokes behind Warren and one stroke behind Moore. Three golfers finished tied for fourth carding 227, including USA’s Marti.
“We will pull a lot out of this tournament because we hadn’t played as well the last couple of tournaments,” said Jackson. “It helps to win here to get us ready for Hattiesburg in two weeks.”
The Lady Jags return to action in two weeks, March 2-3 for the Lady Eagle Classic at Canebrake Country Club.
