CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The No. 32 South Alabama men's tennis team won in convincing fashion Friday over No. 62 BYU in the first round of the 2007 HEB Invitational. The Jags (8-0) posted a 4-0 decision over BYU and will now face No. 36 Old Dominion on Saturday.
The Jaguars opened the scoring winning the top two doubles matches as junior Robert Hodel and sophomore Marek Sramek defeated the Cougars' top duo of James Ludlow and Dominik Kaufhold, 8-6. USA clinched the point with an 8-6 win at number two by senior Dias Doskarayev and junior R.J. Nagel over Christian Hand and Jonathan Sanchez. The third seed featured junior Jack Baker and sophomore Craig Dunne who were tied at six with their BYU opponents.
Sramek, Hodel and Doskarayev posted straight-set victories in singles to give USA the 4-0 win.
Old Dominion (8-3) defeated host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday, 4-2 to advance to the semifinal against the Jaguars. The Monarchs are no strangers to South Alabama as they used to be in the Sun Belt Conference. ODU is led by Henrique Cancado who is currently No. 33 in singles according to the latest ITA poll.
