DOSS? EIGHTH INNING GRAND SLAM POWERS JAGS

MOBILE, Ala. ? David Doss hit a one-out grand slam in the eighth inning, to break a 5-5 tie, as South Alabama went on to defeat Connecticut 10-5 at Stanky Field Friday night. With the win, South Alabama improves to 8-4 on the season, while UCONN drops to 1-3.

Jeff Cunningham also provided some fireworks as he hammered a pair of home runs to give Jag starter Dan Goldberg added run support. Goldberg went six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) before giving way to Brett Turner. Turner picked up his first win of the season. Ted Garry took the loss for the Huskies, he is now 0-1.

The Jags answered a Connecticut single run in the bottom of the third as Cunningham smacked his third round-tripper of the season. Ray Kruml also had an RBI as the Jags took a 3-1 lead.

UCONN answered back with single runs in the third and sixth innings, before they took a 5-3 lead in the top of the seventh. South Alabama tied the game with two quick runs in the bottom of the seventh, which set the stage for Doss’ third home run of the season.

“Doss clutched up with a two-strike grand slam,” said Jag head coach Steve Kittrell. “It doesn’t get any bigger than that. It was a big win for us and one that we had to have. I was really impressed with Connecticut they are a good, solid ball club.”

Next up for South Alabama is a Saturday afternoon game against the Huskies. Game time is set for 1 p.m. Live stats can be accessed at www.usajaguars.com. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or by calling the USA Ticket Office at (251) 460-6047.
