JAGS IN EIGHTH PLACE AT BORDER OLYMPICS

LAREDO, Texas – The University of South Alabama men’s golf team fired rounds of 292 and 288, finishing day-one of the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club in eighth place on Friday. The Jags were led by sophomore Kyle Simmons, who carded a three-under par 141, tied in ninth. Lamar is leading the team competition recording rounds of 285 and 270, while Texas-Arlington golfer Zack Reeves is in first place after recording a seven-under par 137.

Behind Burns is fellow sophomore Daniel Burns, who fired rounds of 72 and 71. Junior Jonny Caldwell turned in scores of 74 and 72, while freshman Marc-Etienne Bussieres carded a two-round score 151 (75-76). Sophomore Dan Swomley recorded rounds of 78 and 75 to round out the Jags scoring.

“The guys are playing ok, but we are missing some putts we should make,” said South Alabama men’s coach Ben Hannan. “We left some opportunities on the course that we need to convert tomorrow.”

Four golfers are tied in second place, one stroke behind Reeves, with six-under par 138.

Vanderbilt is currently in second place, recording rounds of 285 and 281, while Houston and Texas-Arlington both carded 570 on the day to finish tied in third. Baylor is in fifth after carding a 573.

“We are getting a good look at some higher ranked seeds, but we need to elevate our game in order to keep up,” said Hannan.

The final round of the Border Olympics will begin Saturday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
