MOBILE, Ala. ? For the second consecutive game, South Alabama got a key triple, scoring multiple runs, to lift it to a win. Friday night, Clint Toomey provided the heroics, hammering a seventh inning, 0-2 offering in to the right center field gap, scoring two runs, leading the Jags to victory.
The win improved the Jag record to 13-7 and 1-3 in Sun Belt Conference play. Arkansas State dropped to 8-10 and 1-3 in the SBC. Dan Goldberg picked up the win for USA, improving to 3-1 on the season. Nick Lambert took the loss in relief for ASU, he is 3-1.
“This is the second night in a row we have fallen behind, it was 3-1 in the seventh and it wasn’t looking good,” said USA head coach Steve Kittrell. “We got a leadoff walk and a great base hit bunt and then Toomey clutched up with a big triple in the gap.”
ASU opened a 3-1 lead over the Jags thanks to a two-run sixth inning. Aaron Ferguson and Brandon Eller each had doubles, leading to a pair of Indian runs. A.J. Prickel then hammered the first pitch of the seventh inning over the wall, to give ASU a 3-1 lead.
Eric Shortell provided the only Jag offense until the seventh inning, a solo home run to left center field in the fourth inning. ASU starter Nathan Gates held the Jags at bay until the seventh inning when Lambert took over and the Jags took advantage.
South Alabama scored six runs in the seventh, all off of Lambert. Three USA runs scored thanks to three Indian errors. USA’s big blow came from Toomey, as he hit his third triple of the season, tying the game at three. The eventual go-ahead run came in on a David Doss grounder.
ASU scored two times in the ninth to make things interesting, as the Indians had the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate. Doss got Ryan Hudgins to fly out to center field to end the game.
