MOBILE, Ala. ? The University of South Alabama women’s tennis team remained undefeated at home this spring season with a 6-1 victory over Southeastern Conference foe Ole Miss Wednesday afternoon at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
With the win, South Alabama improves to 7-6 in dual match play, while the Lady Rebels fall to 4-10. USA, ranked 64th in the latest ITA poll, will next begin a four-match road swing against SMU on March 18 in Little Rock, Ark.
As they have in their last two matches, South Alabama jumped out to an early 1-0 match lead after capturing two of the three doubles matches. The Jaguars’ Jelena Krivacevic and Rita Freitas picked up an 8-2 victory at the No. 2 position and the duo of Adrianna Solarova/Sylvanie Spangenberg, olaying at No. 1, clinched the point with an 8-3 win of their own. Ole Miss prevented the doubles sweep with an 8-4 victory in the third spot.
Heading into singles action, the Lady Rebels tied the match back up at 1-1 with a straight-set victory at the No. 3 position, but the Jaguar women went on to take the final five singles competitions en route to the 6-1 victory. For the second straight day, Solarova, ranked No. 46 in singles competition, clinched the match for USA when she defeated Ilona Somers of Ole Miss, ranked No. 74 by the ITA, in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-1.
