MOBILE, Ala. ? The University of South Alabama women’s tennis team picked up a huge win Tuesday afternoon when it knocked off No. 47 Washington State, 6-1 at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
With the win, South Alabama (6-6) remains undefeated at home, while the loss drops the Cougars to 9-7 on the season. USA will return to action on Wednesday when it hosts Southeastern Conference foe Ole Miss at 11 a.m. Admission is free to the public.
The Jaguar women jumped out to a 1-0 match lead after picking up doubles victories at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots. USA’s Jelena Krivacevic and Rita Freitas easily defeated WSU’s team of Amy Toth and Anastesia Opata, 8-3 at No. 2, but the Cougar duo of Ekaterina Burduli and Marjolein van de Ven evened things up with an 8-4 victory of their own. Burduli and van de Ven defeated South Alabama’s Adrianna Solarova and Sylvanie Spangenberg at the No. 1 position.
With the doubles portion even at one match apiece, USA’s Michaela Babicova and Dijana Stanic, playing at the third spot, clinched the doubles point when they held off Washington State’s Aleksandra Stefanova and Aleksandra Cekic 8-5. With the win, Stanic and Babicova improve to 9-2 in dual match play and 16-5 overall.
South Alabama continued its dominant performance in the singles competition, taking all but one of the matches. Spangenberg and Solarova each picked up straight-set victories at the Nos. 6 and 1 positions to give USA a 3-0 match lead. Washington State’s van de Ven prevented the shut out with a two-set win of her own at No. 3, but Stanic, Babicova and Krivacevic were each victorious for the Jaguar women to give USA the 6-1 match win.
