CLEMSON, S.C. - The 18th-ranked South Alabama men's tennis team avenged its first loss of the season with a pair of wins over No. 50 Arizona State and No. 75 Indiana on Sunday to conclude the 2007 Clemson Spring Invitational. The Jags defeated Indiana 6-1 and Arizona State 5-2. With the wins, USA improves to 12-1 this season and now has a 7-1 record against teams ranked in top 75.
"This was great to comeback and get these wins today," Jaguar assistant coach Daniel Silverstein said. "We now return home to prepare for a very tough Blue/Grey Tournament in Montgomery next weekend."
USA opened the match with the Hoosiers taking two of three matches in doubles for the early 1-0 lead. The Hoosiers did not field a number three seed doubles because of an injury to their number six player in singles. USA took a 2-0 lead winning by forfeit at number six due to the injury. No. 94 senior Dias Doskarayev downed David Bubenicek at the top spot in singles, 6-1, 6-2 for a 2-0 lead. Thomas Richter handed No. 27 sophomore Marek Sramek his second consecutive loss, 6-3, 6-1 for the Hoosiers' only point.
The Jaguars followed the Indiana win with a 5-2 decision over Arizona State. The Jaguars and Sun Devils spilt the first two doubles matchs and need junior Jack Baker and sophomore Craig Dunne to win a 8-3 match at number three for the 1-0 lead. Juan Carlos Rebaza upset Doskarayev at the top spot in three sets, and T.J. Bellama knocked off junior Robert Nagel at number five for ASU's two singles wins. Baker, Sramek, Hodel and Dunne all put away their opponents for the win.
The Jaguars will return home to play in the 2007 Blue/Grey Tournament in Montgomery, Ala. The field will feature an number of highly ranked teams and the field will be released in the next few days.
