MOBILE, Ala. ? On a very windy afternoon, the University of South Alabama completed a three-game sweep over the Siena Saints with a 10-1 win Thursday at Stanky Field. With the win, South Alabama improves to 7-4, while Siena slides to 0-6.
For the third consecutive game, the Jaguars racked up double digits in both runs and hits. Eric Shortell led the way offensively for South Alabama, going 2-for-2 with two home runs and three RBIs. Bunky Kateon continued his red-hot hitting by going 3-for-3 on the day.
“I can’t ever remember playing in wind quite this hard,” said head coach Steve Kittrell. “I thought our hitters did a good job of showing some discipline and waiting for a pitch they could drive.”
On the mound for the Jags, freshman Lance Baxter made his first career start. Baxter went five innings and allowed just one run, while fanning six to record his first win as a Jag. Corey Muscara took the loss for Siena, going 2.2 innings and allowing five runs (three earned).
“I thought Lance Baxter was outstanding. This is the Lance Baxter we had hoped to see. He showed some maturity out there, he threw strikes, had a great change up and had good pop on his fastball.”
Next up for South Alabama is a three-game weekend series against the Connecticut Huskies at Stanky Field. Game times are 6 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
