JAGS SEEK SWEEP AFTER 17-3 WIN OVER SIENA

MOBILE, Ala. ? For the second consecutive day, the South Alabama bats did the talking at Stanky Field, as South Alabama romped past Siena, by a score of 17-3 Wednesday afternoon. The Jags improved to 6-4, while Siena dropped to 0-5.

Jag junior left-hander Stephen Boyd got the start and went five innings, allowing just three runs (one earned). Boyd picked up the win, he is now 3-0 on the season. Andy Wells took the loss for Siena. Wells went four innings and gave up seven earned runs.

“We swung the bats well and our guys are starting to look like they are getting in sync and hitting it a lot better,” said USA head coach Kittrell. “This was a good day for us, we played well and of course we need to come out and hope the weather cooperates and play hard again (tomorrow).”

South Alabama exploded for three big innings, scoring five runs in the second, six runs in the sixth and four more in the bottom of the eighth. David Doss, Ray Kruml and Jeff Cunningham each went deep for South Alabama. Doss led the way going 3-for-6 with a home run, a triple and a double. The triple for Doss was his fourth of the season.

Four Jaguar pitchers saw action in Wednesday’s contest. Boyd got the start and was relieved by James Dunning. Doss took over and worked two scoreless innings, before giving way to Matt Petersen. Petersen made his first appearance since June 3, 2005 after missing the entire 2006 season due to Tommy John surgery. He closed out the game with a strikeout and a double play.

South Alabama will go for the sweep Thursday afternoon, as the Jags and the Saints tangle at 2 p.m. Friday night South Alabama will open a three-game weekend series against the Connecticut Huskies. Game times for the series are 6 p.m. Friday night, 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon and 1 p.m. Sunday.
