MOBILE, Ala. ? The University of South Alabama softball team won a 10-0 decision over Alabama State on Wednesday afternoon. The Jaguars defeated the Lady Hornets in five innings, to collect their fifth run-rule win of the season.
Due to the unfortunate injury of one of the Lady Hornets, the second game of the doubleheader was cancelled because ASU did not have enough players to field the game.
Junior Evelyne Pare led off the game, drawing a walk, stealing a base and scoring on her first two plate appearances, giving the Jags a 2-0 lead.
With one out in the fourth inning, the Jags’ bats exploded, scoring seven runs before the second out was recorded. The inning was highlighted by a triple from Pare and doubles by freshman Julie Morton and junior Taylor Rich.
Freshman pitcher Beth Pilgrim (3-1) struck out nine batters, while only giving up three hits, in five innings of work, earning her third win of the season, with all three coming in run-ruled games. Whitney Valentine (1-5) suffered the loss for the Lady Hornets, giving up 10 runs on nine hits. She struck out eight batters and walked seven in four innings pitched.
USA will travel to Florida to participate in the Altamonte Springs Tournament against Eastern Michigan, Villanova, Holy Cross and Stetson, March 2-4.
