MOBILE, Ala. ? No. 30 South Alabama snapped a three match losing streak against No. 54 Mississippi State 5-2 Sunday at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Courts. With the win, the Jags remain the Sun Belt Conference’s only unbeaten team at 7-0.
“Sweeping the doubles point really set the tone of the match,” Jaguar assistant coach Daniel Silverstein said. “Beating Mississippi State after losing to them three straight years gives our guys great confidence heading into the HEB Invitational this week in Corpus Christi, Texas.”
USA opened the scoring winning the doubles point, though it was not an easy task. USA’s top duo of sophomore Marek Sramek and junior Robert Hodel came back from a 5-0 deficit to tie the match at seven and eventually won the tie-breaker 7-3. Senior Dias Doskarayev and junior R.J. Nagel made quick work of Artem Kuzentsov and Pjotrs Necajevs, 8-2 for the first win.
Sophomore Craig Dunne and junior Jack Baker had a 5-2 lead on their opponents at number three, but held off a furious rally by the Bulldogs for a 9-7 win and clinched the doubles point. Moments later, Sramek and Hodel began their impressive comeback.
In singles, the Jags jumped to a 3-0 lead before Bake clinched the match at number two with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Phillippe Frayssinoux, putting USA up 4-0. Mississippi State would not go away as Ryan Farlow scored the first point for the Bulldogs at number six with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Dunn. Doskarayev won the first set of his match with Ivan Bjelica at the top spot (6-3), but dropped the second (6-1) and lost at tough 11-9 decision in the tie-break.
USA heads to the HEB Invitational in Corpus Christi, Texas beginning Thursday. USA was the runner-up in the 2006 HEB Invitational. The field consists of top teams from all over the country. The Jags return home on April 15 against North Florida.
