HUNTINGTON, W.V. ? The No. 74 ranked University of South Alabama women’s team fought hard Sunday afternoon but dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 57 Marshall at the Huntington Tennis Center.
Marshall improves to 9-4 on the season with the win, while the Jags fall to 4-5 on the season.
The Thundering Herd came out and took two of the three doubles matches to jump out to a 1-0 match lead. The lone victory for South Alabama came when USA’s Michaela Babicova and Dijana Stanic defeated Marshall’s Jessica Keener and Yulia Kashekina, 8-6, at the No. 3 position.
In singles competition, the Herd went up 2-0 in the match with a win at the No. 3 position. Kashelkina captured a victory at the third spot when USA’s Rita Feitas had to retire. Jelena Krivacevic then brought the Jags to within one when she defeated Lynzee Kever in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) at No. 4. South Alabama’s Sylvanie Spanenberg, playing at No. 6, was able to capture a three-set victory of her own (6-3, 6-7 (7-5), 7-5) to tie the match at 2-2, but Marshall’s Karolina Soor’s (3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3) win at No. 2 and Schmitt’s (ranked 28th but the ITA) win at the No. 1 spot clinched the match victory for the Herd.
USA will continue on the road when the Jaguar women travel to Clemson, S.C., to take on the 12th-ranked Tigers on March 1 at Noon.
