MOBILE, Ala. - The University of South Alabama men's tennis team, ranked No. 32 in the nation, ran its spring record to five wins against no losses with a shutout victory over the visiting Southeastern Louisiana Lions on Saturday. The side from Hammond, La., drops to 2-1 with the result at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Courts. The Jags head to Troy University for a their first Sun Belt Conference match-up of the 2007 season on Feb. 20, and return home for a tilt against Mississippi State on Feb. 25.
Doubles play proved the Lions a worthy opponent, though unranked, as they split with the Jags for the first two completed matches. Jags freshman Craig Dunne teamed with junior Jack Baker to take out Jakub Kwasniewicz and Vladimir Paunic at the No. 3 position, 8-4. It was by the same score that Lions Ondrej Krivka and Matthieu Leboucher upset R.J. Nagel and Dias Doskarayev, the No. 33 pairing in the country.
To capture the first point of the match, Jags Robert Hodel and Marek Sramek fought a highly contentious battle against Medhi Darlis and Julian Lousao at the No. 2. Trading leads through the first 10 games, the Jag duo finally quelled the Lions roar, 8-5.
In singles, Nagel topped Darlis at the No. 5 position, 6-1, 6-0. Soon after, Nagel's doubles teammate, Doskarayev, posted to the same tally at the No. 1 over Julian Lousao.
At the No. 6, Dunne was a straight set victor, 6-1, 6-1, against Kwasniewicz, as was Baker, playing at the No. 1 for the first time this term, downing Leboucher, 6-1, 6-1, to up his overall record to 8-0.
Sramek staved off Krivka, 7-5, 6-1, at the No. 3. The Jag sophomore is the 20th-ranked singles player in the country and stands on a 12-1 mark for the spring.
In the one three-set match of the afternoon, Hodel preserved the shut out for the men's side. Despite dropping the first set, 4-6, the Romanian junior took the final frames, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9).
