MOBILE, Ala. ? The No. 73 University of South Alabama women’s tennis team captured a 5-2 victory Thursday over Southeastern Conference foe Mississippi State at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts. 

“It’s always nice to get a win over a SEC team,” said South Alabama women’s tennis head coach Jaco Keyser.  “With that said, we still have plenty of work to do and plenty of improvement to make.”

USA improves to 2-4 on the season with the win, while MSU falls to 2-2 in dual match play.  The Jaguar women will look to capture their third-straight home win of the season when they take on Tennessee Tech Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at the Lubel Courts.

The Jags came out and quickly went up 1-0 in the match, picking up wins at the Nos. 1 and 3 doubles positions.  USA’s team of Michaela Babicova and Dijana Stanic defeated MSU’s Tatiana Feit and Valeriya Makarycheva, 8-5 at the third spot.  At No. 1, the Jag duo of Adrianna Solarova/Sylvanie Spanenberg sealed the doubles point with an 8-6 victory of its own.  Jelena Krivacevic and Rita Frietas almost completed the doubles sweep when the tandem rallied back from a 7-3 deficit to knot the match at 7-7.  The Lady Bulldogs’ Daniela Juskova and Renee Joseph captured the final point though with an 8-3 victory in the tie-breaker.

In singles competition, South Alabama took the match victory with straight set victories at the Nos. 1, 2 and 4 positions.  Babicova clinched the match victory for the Jags when she defeated Elna De Villers 7-6 (9-7) and 6-0.  Frietas, a true freshman, also captured her first collegiate win of the season with a two-set victory of her own (6-3, 7-6 (7-5)) at No. 3. 

Mississippi State did prevent the match sweep with singles wins at No 5 and 6.
