GUANLAN, China ? Former Jaguar All-American Heath Slocum and Team USA teammate Boo Weekley fell on the third hole of extra golf at the OMEGA Mission Hills World Cup of Golf, Sunday. Held at the Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzen, China, the Americans came up a stroke short against Scottish teammates Colin Montgomerie and Marc Warren.
Team USA fought hard all day, as they were two shots back of the Scots going into the 15th hole. Slocum forced the playoff after making two birdies on the last four holes, a 10-footer on 15 and a pressure packed five-footer on 18. Slocum and Weekley led by one stroke after the first three days and finished the four-round tournament with a 25-under par 263.
The two Americans were fortunate to be playing in the tournament, since Weekley was ranked 43rd in the United States. When he was named to the team, Weekley looked to his former high-school teammate Slocum as a partner.
“It was a wonderful experience,” Slocum noted. “This would have been icing on the cake to top it off with a victory.”
Former Jaguar golfer Gareth Maybin also competed in the tournament playing with Michael Hoey for Team Ireland. They finished in 24th place, shooting seven-under par 281.The World Series of Golf has been played 54 times with such names as Tiger Woods, Jacks Nicklaus and Sam Snead being a part of winning teams.
