SOUTH ALABAMA FALLS 3-1 TO NEW ORLEANS IN FINALE OF THREE-MATCH HOMESTAND

MOBILE, Ala. ? The University of South Alabama volleyball team attempted to pick up a three-match weekend sweep Sunday afternoon at Jag Gym, but the Jags were unable to do so as they fell 3-1 (30-26, 22-30, 30-26, 30-16) to New Orleans in Sun Belt action.

 

USA falls to 7-11 on the season and 2-6 in league play, while UNO improves to 10-10 overall and 4-3 in the SBC.  The Jaguar women will now take to the road for three-straight matches, beginning with UALR on Friday at 7 p.m. in Little Rock, Ark.

 

Juliana Pallamin de Almeida led the Jags offensively in the loss with 15 kills.  The Privateers had four players finish in double-figures in that category led by Lindsey Boler (16) and Lindsey Lloyd (15).  USA senior libero Shannon VanAntwerp also added 17 digs in the loss.

 

GAME ONE: New Orleans 30, South Alabama 26

 

The first half of the opener was a game of runs with each club answering the others.  With the score tied at 17-17, New Orleans took control with a quick five-point spurt.  USA was able to pull with in two on a couple of occasions down the stretch, but that was as close as it got.  Lloyd sealed the four-point victory for the Privateers with one of her 15 kills.

 

GAME TWO: South Alabama 30, New Orleans 22

 

USA was able to even the match up at one game apiece with a 30-22 win in the second contest of the afternoon.  South Alabama used a big run mid-way through game two to take control.  Tied at 11-11, Almeida ignited an 8-2 run over the next 10 points with one of her put aways to put the Jags up 19-13.  USA went on to lead by as many as 11 at 27-16, before taking the eight-point win in game two.

 

GAME THREE: New Orleans 30, South Alabama 26

 

In the third game, USA controlled much of the contest.  Brittany Blackwelder put South Alabama just four points away from the game victory at 26-22 with one of her nine kills, but after a Privateer time out, UNO answered with an 8-0 run to end the game and go up 2-1 in the match with the 30-26 win.  Lloyd keyed the New Orleans run with three more of her kills.

 

GAME FOUR: New Orleans 30, South Alabama 16 

 

Riding the momentum from the previous game, UNO took control of game four right out of the gate.  The Privateers opened the finale with a 10-3 run and never looked back, leading by as many as 15 before taking the 30-16 victory.
