MOBILE, Ala.
? The University of South Alabama
soccer team dropped a tough 3-2 decision at home to Louisiana-Lafayette, Friday
night. The Jaguars fought back from 2-0 and 3-1 deficits, but was unable to
close the gap against the Ragin’ Cajuns. With the loss the Jaguars fell to
8-6-3 and 3-4-2 in the Sun Belt, while ULL improved to 8-6-3 and 4-2-3 in the
league.
“That was as flat as we have come out and played all year
long,” head coach Mike Varga said. “Against a good team like ULL we can’t give
them opportunities like we did tonight.”
The Ragin’ Cajuns got on the board first in the eight minute
with a goal from Courtney Hofland and struck back on a 25th minute goal from Stephanie
Lynch. The Jaguars fought back one minute later on senior Shoshana Sevel’s
first goal of the season and putting USA within one at 2-1.
ULL came out in the second half and pushed the lead to 3-1
on Jenn Hungate’s first goal of the season, with Lynch providing the assist.
South Alabama continued to play together as a team and put USA within one in the 71st
minute. Michelle Leppert played a perfect ball into Sam Stocker for her fourth goal
of the season and cut the lead to 3-2. The Jaguars had several opportunities in
the final 20 minutes, but was unable to put a ball in the back of the net.
USA
will look to rebound at home in an important match against Louisiana-Monroe
Sunday afternoon at “The Cage.”
“Hopefully we learned a lesson from tonight’s loss and we will
play better Sunday afternoon,” Varga added.
The match against ULM
is at 1 p.m. and will be senior day as the Jaguars honor seniors Sunny Haaland,
Bri Nelson, Michelle Leppert and Shoshana Sevel.
