MOBILE, Ala. - The University of South Alabama soccer team held strong in overtime play as they defeated Florida International 1-0 at “The Cage,” Sunday. South Alabama finished the first weekend of a four home conference stand, 1-0-1.
“I thought we played well overall and I was glad to see Amanda put the header in for the win,” head coach Mike Varga said. “We have to play well at home in conference games and we that did today.”
The Jaguars were 0-1-1 in overtime games this season before Senior Amanda Douglas headed in the game winner on a Sam Slover corner kick. The seventh minute overtime goal was Douglas’ first on the season. Goalie Kelsie Langford recorded her fifth shutout of season on six saves.
“We have some tough games next weekend here at home, but I think we are playing confident heading into the tournament,” Varga added.
The Jaguars continue their homestand with a match against Louisiana-Lafayette Friday at 7 p.m. and Louisiana-Monroe Sunday at 1 p.m. All match results can be accessed at usajaguars.com.
