MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. ? The University of South Alabama women’s team dropped its second straight match Sunday morning when Western Michigan managed to capture a 5-2 victory over the Jags in the third place match of the Minnesota Court Classic hosted by the University of Minnesota at the Baseline Tennis Center.
With the loss, USA falls to 0-2 on the young season, while the Broncos improve to 3-3. The Jaguar women will next open the home portion of its 2007 spring schedule when they entertain Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
Like the previous day against Wake Forest, the Jaguar women found themselves down 0-1 after the double portion of the match. WMU picked up wins at both the No. 1 and 2 positions, while USA’s duo of Dijana Stanic and Michaela Babicova prevented the sweep with an 8-3 victory at the third spot over Carrie Jeanmaire and Emily Dudzik.
In singles action, the Broncos pushed their lead out to 2-0 when Ashley Moccia won in straight sets over Rita Freitas (6-1, 6-1) at No. 6. USA’s Adrianna Solarova and Michaela Babicova pulled the Jags even at 2-2 with straight set victories of their own at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions. Solarova defeated Kerstin Pahl, 6-4 and 6-2, while Babicova defeated Jeanmaire, 6-4, 6-4. Western Michigan, however, took the final three singles matches and sealed the victory with wins at the Nos. 3, 4 and 6 spots.
