MOBILE, Ala. - The University of South Alabama men’s golf team concluded the 2006 Callis Communications Intercollegiate on Tuesday with a 10-under par 854 finishing in third place at Azalea City Golf Club behind Mississippi State and Southeastern Louisiana.
“We definitely played very hard and I am proud of the way the guys competed,” said South Alabama coach Ben Hannan, “We just need to become a little more consistent, but overall I am pleased with the way the guys played.”
Overall Mississippi State won the tournament by shooting 20-under 844. Southeastern Louisiana (848), South Alabama (854), Louisiana-Monroe (855), and Middle Tennessee (856) followed.
Sophomore, Kyle Simmons and junior, Jonny Caldwell both shot a seven-under 209 to tie for sixth, while freshman Marc Bussieres, in his first collegiate tournament, scored a 215. Sophomore Greg Gowen carted a tournament score of five-over 221, freshman Warren West recorded a 231, and Sophomore Dan Swomley rounded out the Jag scoring with a 238.
Senior Dane Thorogood was atop of the individual player leader board with a combined score of 223. Junior, Scott Shouldice and senior, Colm Montgomery shot scores of 236 and 241 respectively.
Mississippi State junior Matt Fast rolled in a 20 foot put on the 18th green to win the overall title with a 36 holes score of 206. He was followed by Belmont’s Jeff Lanier and Brett Bergeron of Southeaster Louisiana who tied for second with a 19-under 207. Rounding out the top five was Rick Cochran of Middle Tennessee (208) and Justin Fetcho South Florida (208).
The Jags continue action on October 2-3 at the Memphis Intercollegiate in Memphis, Tenn.
