MOBILE, Ala. ? The University of South Alabama baseball team will open its fall practice schedule Tuesday the same way it has for 37 years, with the running of the 38th Annual Intangible Mile at 5:30 p.m., at the USA Track Facility.
“The event is a tradition we have had for a long time,” said Jag head coach Steve Kittrell. “It is a good gauge for us to see the condition of our players as we start into fall practice.”
Former Jaguar head coach Eddie Stanky started the tradition of running the mile to open fall practice, in order to gauge the fitness level of his players. Each of the Jag players will have six minutes to complete the mile. If any player fails to make the time, that player has to run the mile the following days until they complete it under the allotted time.
South Alabama will start its fall practice schedule on Sept. 20 at Stanky Field. After three weeks of practice, the Jags will conclude fall practice with the annual Red and Blue World Series. The schedule for the best-of-seven intersquad series will be finalized and released later this week.
Red-shirt freshman Clint Reynolds captured the 2005 Mile with a time of 5:13. Reynolds will defend his title looking to become the fifth multiple winner of the mile in the last 15 years. In the field this year is two-time winner Tyler Kerns, Kerns looks to be the first three-time winner in USA history.
