JAGUARS EARN FIRST VICTORY OF THE SEASON, 1-0

MOBILE, Ala. - The University of South Alabama women’s soccer team earned its first victory of the season at The Cage Sunday afternoon, defeating Cleveland State 1-0 in the third game of the 2006 KELME Port City Classic. USA improves to 1-5 on the year, while Cleveland State falls to 1-5.

The game was scoreless at halftime. USA had three shots, while Cleveland State countered with four shots.

Junior Kelly Tarrant was fouled in the box in the 63rd minute giving the Jaguars their second penalty kick of the season. Tarrant put the ball in the upper right corner of the net, giving USA a 1-0 lead. Senior Jenn Edgar scored on a penalty kick against McNeese State last Sunday.

The Jags had seven shots on the day with three each from Tarrant and sophomore Cortney Stewart and one by Sam Stocker. The Vikings had eight shots with three on goal. CSU’s Ashley Walchack led the Vikings with three shots.

In the nightcap, North Florida posted a 5-0 win over Nicholls State to win the tournament. Afterwards, the 2006 KELME Port City Classic All-Tournament team was announced as two players were named from Nicholls State and Cleveland State, three from South Alabama and four from North Florida.

The Jaguars return to action next Friday (Sept. 15) at The Cage against LSU at 7 p.m.
