PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Monday morning, the University of South Alabama men’s and women’s golf teams will take to the links in Port St. Lucie, Fla., for the 2006 Aeropostale Sun Belt Conference Golf Tournament. PGA Village will be the site of this year’s tournament. The event will run three days, with the final round coming Wednesday. The men’s team will defend its 2005 SBC title. Last season the Jags, led by freshman Jonny Caldwell took home the team honors and a birth in the NCAA west regional in Palo Alto, Calif. The Jags posted three round in the 290’s but finished 18th in the regional.
The Lady Jags take to the links riding one of their best seasons in recent memory, under head coach T.J. Jackson. Jackson’s Lady Jags have not finished outside the top five in any tournament this season. The Lady Jags have taken home four runner-up finishes this season.
Junior Michelle Toth is the only Jag to win an event this season. Toth fired a final round, four under-par 68 in the 2006 Lady Jag Spring Invitational, to take home individual honors. Junior Elin Andersson leads the Lady Jags with a stroke average of 75.28. Toth is right behind with an average of 76.61.
The Lady Jags have only won the SBC crown one time, that coming in 1997 when the tournament was held in Mission, Tex. Two South Alabama representatives of the 30-year Sun Belt women’s All-Time team, Kassie Goodfellow and Jennifer Krupa were both on that team.
