POST SEASON-HIGH 14 EXTRA-BASE HITS IN 20-7 ROMP OF UALR

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The University
of South Alabama Jaguars ripped 23 hits and scored 20 runs, enroute
to a 20-7 win over the Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans, at Gary Hogan
Field Saturday afternoon. Zach Piccola picked up the win for USA
improving to 3-3.
The Jags improve
to 24-15 and 6-5 in Sun Belt play. South Alabama gets above .500
in the conference for the first time since the first SBC weekend,
when it took two out of three from UL-Lafayette.
South Alabama
also recorded a season high for extra-base hits with 14. Nine doubles,
a triple and four homeruns, powered USA past UALR. David Freese
extended his hitting streak to ten games with a three-hit performance.
Freese also hammered his ninth homerun of the year. He also had
three RBI’s, to give him 51 on the season.
The Jags opened
the scoring in the first inning, giving Piccola a 2-0 lead to work
with. Patrick Weaver singled to right field to get the rally started.
David Freese then followed with a missle double to center field.
Jeff Cunningham then singled on a 3-0 pitch, to plate Weaver to
take a 1-0 lead. The second USA run scored when UALR starter Trevor
Clay uncorked a wild pitch, scoring Freese, for a 2-0 lead.
South Alabama
got to Clay in the third inning. Tyler Jones led off with his eighth
triple of the season. With one out, Freese hammered his second double
of the game down the right field line, scoring Jones. Cunningham
then followed with an RBI single up the middle. David Doss, Aaron
George, Guillermo Martinez and Joel Collins each followed with hits,
as the Jags pushed the lead to 8-0.
The Trojans
plated their first run in the bottom of the third inning. Tim Lawrence
doubled down the left field line, and scored on a single to left
field by Ryan Gotcher. Brian Asbill then hammered a double to left
field, to put two runners in scoring position. Jacob Stover singled
up the middle, cutting the lead to 8-2. Derek Eilers capped off
the scoring with an RBI ground out to shortstop. At the end of the
fourth inning, USA led 8-3.
The Jags continued
to bang the ball around in the top of the fifth inning. Weaver led
off with a walk, which brought Freese to the plate. The leading
Jag hitter didn’t disappoint, hammering his ninth homerun
to left field and extending the Jag lead to 10-3.
The onslaught
continued to in the fifth inning. Ben Daw singled up the middle
with one out to get it going. Jones followed with a double down
the right field line. Weaver then launched his second homerun of
the weekend, a three run blast to left field to put the Jags up
13-3. Doss completed the scoring with his third homerun to left
field. Cunningham scored ahead of Doss, giving USA a 15-3 lead.
Cunningham scored
the 16th USA run in the top of the seventh inning. Martinez singled
home Cunningham on a rocket to left field. Martinez’s knock
was the 20th hit for South Alabama in the game.
The Jags plated
three more runs in the top of the eighth inning. Daw, Jones and
Davis all scored runs. Davis came up two inches short of his first
homerun when his fly ball landed directly on top of the wall. He
did collect an RBI double on the play. Jeff Morris also picked up
an RBI on a sacrifice fly. The score in the middle of the eight
was, USA 19, UALR 3.
The Trojans
scored three runs in bottom of the eighth inning on back-to-back
homeruns by Brett Lawler and Smiley. Lawler’s homerun was
a two-run shot. Smiley followed with a solo shot of his own.
Collins added
the last USA with a long homerun to left center field. It was Collins’
third extra-base hit of the game, pushing the USA lead to 20-6.
Tyler Kerns
came on to pitch the ninth inning. Kerns gave up a run on two base
hits, nailing down the Jag win.
USA will go
for the sweep Sunday afternoon, as they take on the Trojans at 1
p.m. Joey Doan will take to the hill, as the Jags look for the sweep.
