MOBILE,
Ala. - The University of South Alabama women’s golf
fired an opening round 297 to sit in a tie for the lead at the 2006
USA Lady Jaguar Invitational at Azalea City Golf Course Monday.
The Lady Jags
were led on the day by junior Sara Marti. Besides shooting a team
low 73 to sit two shots back of the lead, Marti also picked up the
shot of the day, when she holed out a wedge shot on the par-five
eleventh hole for eagle. Juniors Michelle Toth and Elin Andersson
both posted two over-par 74’s. Senior Susanne Jepson carded
76. Freshman Shirley Harvey finished the first round with an 84.
“I am
very proud of the way the girls played today,” said Lady Jag
head coach T.J. Jackson. “Today 297 is a good score for us.
The girls put it all together, they all contributed and that’s
what it takes to get a good score. We are in a good situation for
us to compete for the championship tomorrow.”
South Alabama
is tied at the top with Middle Tennessee. Lamar sits in third place
after posting a team score of 303. Southern Miss sits in third place
with 306. Western Carolina and Florida Atlantic are tied for fifth
with 307.
Individually,
Preaw Phol-Uayporn of Florida Atlantic, leads the field posting
71, the only score under-par. Christa Gunn of Lamar and Tara Watters
of New Orleans each sit a single shot back of the lead at even-par
72. USA’s Marti is one of four players in the field to sit
two shots back.
The final round
is scheduled to be an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. USA will be paired
with Middle Tennessee and Lamar for the final day.
