MOBILE,
Ala. - Guillermo Martinez went three-for-four and David
Doss picked up his first win as a Jaguar in a 7-3 South Alabama
victory, over SWAC member, Alabama State at Stanky Field Monday
afternoon.
South Alabama
took the lead early with a single run in the bottom of the first
inning. Patrick Weaver drove a double to left center field. Weaver
then stole third and watched ASU catcher Furquan Shamsud-Din’s
throw bounce into left field. Weaver scampered home giving the Jags
the lead.
With South Alabama
leading 2-0 in the top of the sixth, ASU left fielder Terry Givens
led off with a single. After a sacrifice bunt by John Stevens, Anthony
Hall lashed a double to right center field cutting the Jag lead
to 2-1. Selmon Pearson then tied the game with a double down the
left field line.
USA blew the
game open in the bottom of the seventh. ASU reliever Joshua Froneberger
was greeted by Jag bats to the tune of four runs. Weaver led off
with a walk, followed by a solid single to left by David Freese.
Michael Cart then bounced a ball through Pearson at third base plating
both Weaver and Freese. Pinch-hitter Jeff Cunningham and designated
hitter Ben Daw both picked up sacrifice flies to put the Jags ahead
by a score of 7-3.
“I really
give Alabama State a lot of credit,” said head coach Steve
Kittrell. “Their left-hander really kept us off balance. Their
guys game out ready to play.”
Doss picked
up the win for USA, which improves to 4-2 on the young season. Doss
pitched three and a third innings, giving up just one earned run.
Alabama State falls to 1-4, with Froneberger taking the loss.
